Afghanistan: the return of the Undocumented

Out of the estimated 1.6 million Afghan people who have sought refuge in Pakistan for years or even decades, some 614,000 have returned to Afghanistan in 2016 according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Among them, 244,000 were not registered as refugees in Pakistan: they are the Undocumented. This status excludes them from regular government assistance being provided to registered returnees, leaving them to fend for themselves in harsh winter conditions.

Afghanistan: the story of Narges, Pakistani refugee

Since heavy fighting broke out between the Pakistani armed forces and the Taliban in North Waziristan Agency in Pakistan in June 2014, over 290,000 Pakistanis crossed the border to seek refuge in Afghanistan. To this date, some 24,000 persons are still living in Gulan refugee camp, in Khost Province, 10 km away from the Pakistani border. SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL has been ensuring the provision of services in the camp since September 2014 and in the surrounding host communities since September 2016.

Afghanistan: Protecting natural resources and livelihoods

In Afghanistan's Bamyan province, people's main sources of food and income are agricultural production and livestock farming, heavily relying on natural resources available in their surrounding environment. Year after year, their livelihoods have however been highly affected by the degradation of these resources, due to entrenched unsuitable practices, as well as to climate change.
