Humanitarian context

Afghanistan remains in the grip of a chronic humanitarian crisis aggravated by a worsening conflict which has gone on for more than three decades. The Afghan population has one of the lowest life expectations in the world (49) and one of the worst maternal mortality rates.

There is chronic lack of access to food, drinking water, sanitation and health services. Currently, 31% Afghans are undernourished. More than 70% have no access to drinking water or sustainable sanitary facilities. This disastrous situation is due to a glaring absence of infrastructure and public services, as well as increasing insecurity.

At the beginning of 2013, the number of displaced persons in the country exceeded 500,000 (OCHA - Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs, May 2013) and the number of Afghan refugees in neighboring countries such as Iran or Pakistan, is estimated to be 2.7 million (UNHCR - United Nations High Commission for Refugees), but this figure would exceed 5 million if undocumented Afghan migrants were included (OIM - International Organization for Migration).

In addition, the urgent needs arising from any natural disasters that occur in Afghanistan create a constantly changing and complex situation. The humanitarian challenges to be faced when the international military forces leave will be immense.
